The Institute of Mathematical Sciences and Physics (IMSP), a degree-granting unit under the College of Arts and Sciences, was one of six National Centers of Excellence in the Basic Sciences that were created on March 23, 1983 by Presidential Decree No. 1416 through Executive Order No. 889. The NCOE’s were established to help advance science and technology in the country, and specifically, to strengthen and broaden the national capability to train scientific leaders and conduct research in the basic sciences.
Dr. Virgilio P. Sison, Director of IMSP, was appointed Chair of a UP System ad-hoc committee tasked to review and prepare the proposals to revise existing university policies on faculty tenure and promotion. The appointment is contained in Administrative Order No. PAEP 13-38 dated 6 May 2013 signed by UP President Alfredo E. Pascual.

Prof. John Mark T. Lampos and Prof. Herbert S. Palines will attend the CIMPA-UNESCO-MESR-MINECO-THAILAND Research School on Graphs, Codes and Designs(GCD) on 20-31 May 2013 at Ramkhamhaeng University, Bangkok, Thailand. Both of them will be on study leave beginning June to take PhD Mathematics in UP Diliman.
Ms. Jane D. Palacio, who recently obtained the MS Mathematics degree and was recommended for corrective promotion to Assistant Professor, will present the paper "Images of Linear Block Codes over Fq + uFq + vFq + uvFq" (co-authored with Dr. Virgilio P. Sison) in the 2013 Spring International Conference on Applied and Engineering Mathematics (AEM-S) to be held in Wuhan China, May 31 - June 2.
