The Institute of Mathematical Sciences and Physics (IMSP), a degree-granting unit under the College of Arts and Sciences, was one of six National Centers of Excellence in the Basic Sciences that were created on March 23, 1983 by Presidential Decree No. 1416 through Executive Order No. 889. The NCOE’s were established to help advance science and technology in the country, and specifically, to strengthen and broaden the national capability to train scientific leaders and conduct research in the basic sciences.

Congratulations to Dr. Editha C. Jose for receiving the UP System International Publication Award for her paper with Dr. Patrizia Donato entitled "Corrector Results for a Parabolic Problem with a Memory Effect" published in ESAIM: Mathematical Modeling and Numerical Analysis, 2010 (44): 421-454.
This is IMSP's second IPA so far this year. |

Prof. Herrera accepted for PhD in Japan |

Prof. Marvin U. Herrera has been accepted in the 2010 International Doctoral Program in Engineering at Kyoto University, Japan, with a Japanese Government (MEXT) scholarship from October 2010 to September 2013. Prof. Herrera's doctoral research will be in the field of nanoscale science and technology under the broad area of materials science and engineering. He will specialize in nanoscale surface processing with the use of organic materials, focusing on the creation of erasable polyacetylene conductive tracks using a scanning probe tip. The research has direct applications in electronics.

Refurbishment of Math mini-lecture halls approved |

The request for the refurbishment of the Mathematics Building MB-108 and MB-110 (including the adjoining room) as mini-lecture halls of the Institute of Mathematical Sciences and Physics was officially approved by UPLB Chancellor Luis Rey I. Velasco. The project which costs P838,096.75 will be used for the following: fabrication of tables, new ceiling, doors, windows, complete repainting of the rooms, installation of air-conditioning units, new white boards, curtains, state-of-the art sound system, motorized screen with remote control, new desktop computers, and LCD projectors.

The theme of the research colloquium is "Building a Strong Diversified Collective Intelligence in Conquering Research and Academic Oddities".
