Operations Research

Brief Description of the Research Area
Operations Research (OR) is the discipline of applying advanced analytical methods from mathematics, science, and engineering to help better decisions in planning ventures and analyzing options. Operations Research is characterized with its broad applicability by its interdisciplinary nature. As OR attempts to resolve the conflicts of interest among the components of the organization in a way that is best for the organization as a whole, the OR team needs to include individuals who collectively trained in mathematics, statistics and probability, economics, business administration, computer science, engineering and the physical sciences, the behavioral sciences and the special techniques of OR.

Objective
The cluster aims to train and strengthen the members through collaborative research work with individuals in social, biological, and environmental sciences.

Previous Activities
The cluster has conducted regular research discussion on fuzzy mathematical programming, fuzzy and multi-stage inventory models, and population assignment problems. Selected members have presented papers to various conferences such as Annual Mathematical Society of the Philippines Conference, International Industrial Engineering Conference and National Operations Research Society of the Philippines Conference, Philippine-American Association of Scientists and Engineers Annual Meeting. Furthermore, an article entitled “___” by Prof. Jerrold M. Tubay has been accepted in the upcoming issue of the UPLB Journal.

Current Activities
Currently, the following members of the cluster are working on the following topics; Rey Bryan M. Cubero on Optimal Continuous Review Inventory Policy for Three-stage Serial System, Mark Lexter de lara on Population Assignment Model with Neighborhood Constraint, and Baltazar P. Villacrusis on Three-stage Inventory System with Stochastic Demand. Also, the SP advisees of Prof. Tubay is working on applying fuzzy modeling to disaster management. Recently, chosen members of the cluster are doing collaborative work with SESAM on Taal Lake restoration.
